Our people: Monika Wakeman
We chat with Monika Wakeman, a recently promoted Director, about life at Deloitte, and life outside of work.
How long have you been at Deloitte and what is your role?
I have been with Deloitte globally for over 12 years! I’ve always worked in the Health and Safety space and have the opportunity to work with a real range of clients to help them understand the impact of health and safety in their business and how to make it work for them.
Why do you like working in the Deloitte Private space?
I firmly believe that the SME market can make a huge difference in health and safety management and can see first-hand the benefit of having good Health and Safety practices. I like how with SMEs you can really make a difference quickly and the outcomes are more visible and faster. I have worked in the SME space both here and in Canada and it’s been such a similar experience.
What do you enjoy most about working in Risk?
I like working in Risk, as I like helping clients see how proper risk management can drive great value to their business and Health and Safety is just one example. By working with the Risk team, we’re able to demonstrate an integrated view of risk management and break down the silos that risk management of specific areas may be in.
How have you got to where you are today in your career?
I got to where we I am now by perseverance and taking advantage of some great opportunities. I took the chances to get myself in front of a variety of clients and involved in different geographies to help understand the many ways you can make a difference with a client. Also, Health and Safety is not often the most popular topic for clients! So I was able to stick to this area by working with clients and Deloitte and demonstrating the value that Health and Safety can bring, not just for legislative compliance.
What is the most common piece of advice you give to clients?
Most common advice is that Health and Safety is not as scary as it sounds and can actually help your business. However, take a tailored approach and be careful with off the shelf products as they may not fit your business operation, need, risks, etc. To have a successful Health and Safety programme, make it fit for you and your people. The more you make it real and practical and aligned on how your business operates, the more it will work.
