Deloitte Private offers specialist services that can be hard to come by in the accounting world. A great example is the work Matthew Parker undertakes when helping clients in the agribusiness sector as they navigate change and maximise opportunities. 

What is your role at Deloitte?

As a Corporate Finance partner, I assist clients with buying and selling businesses, raising capital to fund growth opportunities, and developing their strategic options for the benefit of both the enterprise and its shareholders.

How do you help small business owners?

I am frequently introduced by my accounting colleagues to help a client develop their options and opportunities for growth and investment.

Sometimes this support may simply involve a discussion about the sort of information an investor might be looking for, or understanding what sort of preparation should be undertaken in advance of a successful capital transaction. 

This may extend into providing some hands-on early stage assistance, such as valuation analysis and/or developing a strategic modelling tool to help evaluate and understand the options.

Do you have a specialist area of focus?

I tend to work with a range of clients; however, I am particularly experienced and passionate about working with clients in the primary industries. I come from a farming background myself and have worked with clients across all different types of farming enterprises at all points along the value chain.

What challenges and opportunities do you encounter in the agribusiness sector?

Change is common to all industries and this certainly this applies to farming and agribusiness.

Farming is increasingly becoming "big business" and the growth in corporate farming structures is an increasing trend that's unlikely to slow down.

Another key trend is the value and importance consumers are placing on ‘provenance’. This focus is creating industry opportunity while driving more integrated value chains and greater investment in downstream technologies, processing and marketing.

Tell us about a memorable moment in your career?

My career to date at Deloitte has been incredibly rewarding. I think this reflects the variety and pace of the work and the fact I get to participate in significant moments.

No two projects are the same. I get to influence outcomes on transactions and projects which materially change businesses and organisations and often also the careers and lives of our clients.

This can involve some intense moments, but the way our team pulls together to deliver for our clients is sometimes nothing short of extraordinary. 

In saying all of that, it was great to have been part of the team involved in leading the sale of Strait Shipping to Champ Private Equity earlier this year.
