Our people: Jenny Liu
One of the great features of Deloitte Private is that we offer niche services that can be hard to come by in the accounting world. A great example of this is the work Jenny Liu undertakes, dealing with Chinese clients and translating our New Zealand business and tax laws to make it easy to do business here.
What is your role at Deloitte?
As a tax partner, I help Deloitte Private clients deal with their tax matters and I work with Chinese clients when they first arrive in New Zealand.
What are the challenges when bridging the Chinese and New Zealand cultures?
Due to many Chinese companies still being state owned enterprises, they’re sometimes not that loyal to a certain firm. They will generally go to all Big Four accounting firms and then it becomes work on a project-by-project basis. Chinese companies are also not used to paying high accounting fees and they’re sensitive to this so it’s important to proactively manage their expectations due to the differences in the tax and regulatory systems.
What advantages do we have in dealing with Chinese clients?
Our Chinese specialists including me, all speak Chinese so we’re able to bridge both worlds. We are able to explain business concepts and jargon much better.
Tell us about a highlight in your career?
Where do I start! Getting a job offer from Deloitte Beijing, then getting a job offer from Deloitte Auckland, then being sent to China to prepare a Controlled Foreign Company return. Or it could be presenting at the NZTE China Free Trade Agreement roadshow. Every time we were selected by a key target - a client we are trying to win.
I can’t forget to also mention the time we went down a coal mine in New Zealand and a coal mine in China – we had helicopter rides to the site in New Zealand and once in the Chinese mine we would move around using an electronic ‘flying fox’ machine. But, in saying all of that, nothing beats receiving an email from Thomas confirming me as a partner which I was appointed to this month!
Why do you enjoy working at Deloitte Private?
Initially, I enjoyed the training and the opportunities to learn and build my skills. Later on it was the opportunities available to build my career and the support I received to explore many opportunities.
I also like the fact that Deloitte is a warm working environment and offers flexibility in its working hours. Best of all, the people are great to work with!
