Our people: Andrew Wood
Andrew Wood is an Associate Director in Deloitte Private, who is leading Deloitte’s new offering of the Adaptive Insights platform. He’s passionate about enabling greater business performance using smart technology choices, and took the time to talk to Bite-Size News about his time in the Deloitte Private space and beyond…
Describe your career trajectory so far...
After getting an accounting degree at Victoria University in Wellington, I started at Deloitte as a graduate back in 2010. After five and a half years, I then left to do a CFO role at a footwear retail company for two and a half years, before I returned to the firm last year to introduce Adaptive Insights as a service.
Why do you like working in the Deloitte Private space?
I love the clients we work with, and supporting them with the challenges and the opportunities that a lot of them face. It’s great working closely with the business owners and the leadership teams, and being able to make a difference.
What was it like coming from a finance background specifically?
The finance background helps immensely with my Adaptive Insights software implementations. Being a CA and spending my early years preparing financial models, management reports and financial statements means I really know what the end product needs to function like, as opposed to having a purely software-focused background. It is also great grounding to start working in the performance management space, where I help clients look into their value and supply chains and use business intelligence to monitor performance and help them achieve their goals.
What do you enjoy about working at Deloitte Private?
I enjoy learning from the great people here, especially the Partners and Directors, and sharing all their experiences. It really helps you become a better advisor yourself because you learn from each other.
Also, I've got young children so the flexible hours work well. I place huge value on family time so I always leave the office at a good time to be with them. If it gets a bit busy, I can always do a little work at night, so I can usually spend my mornings and evenings with my family. Deloitte Private allows for a really good mix of family life and work.
What is your favourite piece of advice for clients?
With smart technology choices, we can automate many manual finance process tasks. My favourite piece of advice is to not always view this as a cost-cutting exercise, but to think outside the box and use this available time to redeploy skilled staff and get them to focus on the improvement strategies that they never previously had time for. This can get them a competitive advantage over their competition, who are still doing finance manually.
How would you describe your involvement with the Deloitte Fast 50 so far?
So far I've done some entrant interviews, went to the Wellington & Lower North Island regional event and will be heading up to Auckland for the Fast 50 Festival of Growth in November.
What do you think clients can gain from the Fast 50?
The Fast 50 is a chance to learn from other businesses – hearing about what they've done wrong or right, and using those experiences to analyse their own business. It’s also a good opportunity to talk to Deloitte Private advisors from different services, from Tax to Strategy and Technology. Finally, it’s a great chance for them to take some time to sit back, reflect and celebrate their success.
What are you looking forward to at the Festival of Growth?
I'm looking forward to absorbing the stories of successful companies and learning from their successes and strategies that got them to where they are.
What is your favourite way to spend the weekend?
With friends and family. I’m always with my wife and kids doing walks, bike rides, anything outdoors. It is also great to get some friends together so all the kids can play while we can catch up and enjoy a quiet drink.
Also as a cyclist, I do love to get on my bike and go for a ride. I used to do a lot of races but I was never very competitive, so they were definitely just for fun! My favourites are the K2 Cycle Race in the Coromandel, and the Lake Taupo Cycle Challenge.
