Exceptional entrepreneurs: The 2017 Deloitte Fast 50 winners

This year’s Deloitte Fast 50 winners were true pioneers in the sense that they capitalised on their points of difference and executed well on their plans!

As our Deloitte Fast 50 lead, Bill Hale, comments, “a common theme is that they are all strong across strategy, capability and commitment, but focused on finding a point of difference and nailed it in that niche.”

On average, the 50 companies on the index were about five years old, had 51 staff and turned over about $11 million a year. Read more statistics on our Fast 50 companies in our Fast 50 e-zine here

There can only be two overall winners though and this year it was ZB Homes: Bay of Plenty who won our national Fast 50 index and Xero who won the inaugural Master of Growth index.

ZB Homes: Bay of Plenty

Much like building a house, there are many people and components needed to create a great business. This was the sentiment of this year’s 2017 Fast 50 winners - ZB Homes: Bay of Plenty – who walked away in top spot with 1583% growth!

Considering this company was only founded three years ago, this win served as an amazing success story for Managing Director and Founder, Rik Flowerday, who moved here from Australia’s Gold Coast and bought land on The Lakes subdivision in the Bay of Plenty.

He said he knew the building market was on the way up, but didn’t expect the exponential growth that it's had.

“Our initial business plan was to do 15 builds a year and in our first year we did over 50 contracts.”

This growth has meant the focus of the business switched from sales to systems operations. ZB Homes Bay of Plenty now has around 30 projects on the go at any one time and this year they’ll build 70 houses in total!

“We get to build some really nice houses, from standard family homes in a subdivision to some ‘wow’ houses on a cliff-top. It’s pretty cool,” says Flowerday.

Managing Director of ZB Homes in the Waikato, Zane Beckett, joined Rik on stage to receive the trophy, along with Fiona Flowerday, ZB Homes' Operations Manager.

Xero

Founded by Rod Drury and his personal accountant back in 2006, this company has firmly established itself both here and overseas as the go-to accounting software for SMEs.

So with their sustained growth and increasing popularity, it was no surprise that they took out first place on our inaugural Master of Growth index with 657% growth!

Nick Houldsworth, General Manager of Ecosystems at Xero, accepted the award along with Xero's Small Business Director, Nicole Buisson.

A little history for you – Xero entered the NZX in 2007 gaining 15% on its first trading day. They then entered the Australian market and the UK in 2008 and followed that with the USA in 2011. In June 2014, they topped the Forbes 100 Most Innovative Growth Companies list. A true master of growth!

Huge congratulations to this superstar of a Kiwi company that continues to showcase both here and aboard, that famous Kiwi ingenuity that we’re known for.
